While Swimmers Escaped Violence, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, heard loud noises ringing out through the community.

“We all thought the same, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Exiting her residence, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks on display made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the street, talking to a couple who had hurried up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the path that the crowd was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting into something that surely every instinct would tell you to go in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Crisis

The photo that Ching snapped of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and paramedics attending to numerous the injured.

Community Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to come out of the community, with the beach facility next to the scene of the violence serving as a temporary treatment center. It was shared that other team members were also seen helping out, for instance rushing into the water to assist people needing help.

After the tragedy, messages of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message conveyed thanks for the individuals who showed that “goodness will always overcome evil”.

The squad of beach patrol later shared a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your kind words and support. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our personnel,” the group stated. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it helps those impacted.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent beach safety officers, remarked that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the incident began through to late that night.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” commented a mayor.

“These individuals show altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous shores secure for the public, but what we saw on that day should be commended.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the horror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
