Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Gunbattle at Nigerian School

Security breach at learning center
Educational institutions in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Local residents told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The assault in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Safety emergency in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in the past few months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the conflict.
